I once commented to my daughter that I didn&#8217;t understand why she did some of the things she did and she said &#8220;well, you raised me to be independent, so what did you expect?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">She had a great point there. Raising independent individuals who think for themselves, are responsible, and are accountable to themselves was, I think an underlying goal for most of my reasoning as a parent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">But<\/span>\u00a0BUT, the foundation for all of this independence is Jesus, the cornerstone of our lives. Where true\u00a0<em>independence<\/em>\u00a0lies in complete\u00a0<em>dependence.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I have to put the caveat in here:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fff2cc; color: #3d85c6; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We are not perfect; we were not perfect parents; we didn&#8217;t pray at every meal, we didn&#8217;t have family devotionals, we made a\u00a0<strong>ton<\/strong>\u00a0of mistakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fff2cc; color: #3d85c6; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">OK, son- a\u00a0<strong>kazillion<\/strong>\u00a0mistakes; and often wished that someone had told us what was coming and the impact it would make on our sanity and our finances!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fff2cc; color: #3d85c6; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We had OJT.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fff2cc; color: #3d85c6; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now back to our regularly scheduled post subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We live in a country where independence is valued; some would say it&#8217;s an American&#8217;s Birthright. Yet sometimes, in our parenting, we have a tendency to foster their dependence on us; to want to protect them from everything; to hold on a little too tightly; and to refuse to acknowledge that the spark of independence we see in our children shows they are maturing and learning along the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If we trust God to know what&#8217;s best for all of us then we\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong>\u00a0be able to let them go as they grow, foster that independence and realize that they will make mistakes, screw up, and thoroughly embarrass and sadden us in the process of failing miserably and bring us joy in their success. We\u00a0<strong>can<\/strong>\u00a0confidently watch them continue on that road of independence\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>if<\/em><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0we know that they are dependent upon the Cornerstone, the sure foundation upon which they build their life of independence in this country that declared its own independence that 4th of July, 1776.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Something for myself as a parent:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"color: #6fa8dc;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"color: #6fa8dc;\"><em>Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span id=\"en-NIV-14032\" class=\"text Ps-9-10\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #6fa8dc; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><strong><span id=\"en-NIV-14032\" class=\"text Ps-9-10\">Those who know your name trust in you,<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Ps-9-10\">for you,\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Lord<\/span>, have never forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #6fa8dc; text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">My admonishment to my children:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Ps-9-10\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em style=\"color: #6fa8dc;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29390\" class=\"text Phil-2-14\">Do everything without complaining or arguing,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV1984-29391\" class=\"text Phil-2-15\">so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em style=\"color: #6fa8dc;\"><strong><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29391\" class=\"text Phil-2-15\">depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29392\" class=\"text Phil-2-16\"><em style=\"color: #6fa8dc;\"><strong>as you hold out the word of life\u2014in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. Philippians 2:14-16<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29392\" class=\"text Phil-2-16\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29459\" class=\"text Col-1-9\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">My prayer for my children:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #6fa8dc; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><strong><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29459\" class=\"text Col-1-9\">For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29460\" class=\"text Col-1-10\">And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29461\" class=\"text Col-1-11\">being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29462\" class=\"text Col-1-12\">\u00a0giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29463\" class=\"text Col-1-13\">\u00a0For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-29464\" class=\"text Col-1-14\">in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
