Laughing and appalled at the same time. Laughing because it was coming from HIS mouth and appalled that I must have sounded just the same when giving him a talking to when he was that age. Oh, my goodness. Hysterically funny and tragic all in one breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">We really don\u2019t get how we sound when we are trying to be stern and make a point hit home to our children, do we?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">He didn\u2019t raise his voice but the deep, \u2018I\u2019m being serious\u2019 daddy tone came out for just a few seconds. Her reaction was contrition but more than that, I could tell there were some feelings hurt there, too. It\u2019s so hard for those happy go lucky kiddos who have a great deal of sensitivity to hear \u201cthe voice\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">We talked after she went into the school. After all, this is new territory for him, too. A first grader and a bouncing baby boy can make it tough. He\u2019s hard on her in the ways I was hard on the first two. By the time he arrived on the scene I had mellowed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">I developed a gauge for myself over the years: Is this {issue, behavior, talk, association} going to matter to the person they become in 20 years?\u00a0 Will it adversely affect their relationship to God, their character, their integrity, their ability to socialize with others, or their ability to be an upright human who can relate their love for Christ to those around them?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">To give you an idea of what I\u2019m talking about- this morning she had walked out with a note pad and pen that she had received at her birthday party last weekend. She knows the school rules- not to bring personal toys or items from home unless they are to be used in the learning process. Translation: don\u2019t bring toys and stuff to school. It clutters up the place, causes friction when someone else wants it, and takes away valuable time from learning, not to mention the fact that if it gets lost, then the teacher has a new problem that must be addressed in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">So, no stuff from home. Not a new issue with her. She loves to show and tell and she loves to share. Bless her. But will it matter in 20 years? Maybe, maybe not. After all, sharing is a good thing, right? And show and tell was around in my day too! So, will it matter in 20 years? Bottom line is \u2013 yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">Because this is not a new issue but one now, of disobedience. She knows the rules. She \u201cforgets\u201d the rules. She disobeys the rules. He\u2019s trying to be a good daddy and teach her right from wrong, obedience and the importance of being honest. He had told her to leave it in her room for after school \u2013 more than once this morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">It\u2019s hard being a parent, seeing those traits in your children and trying to mold their hearts while teaching responsibility and accountability. It\u2019s even harder, when you are trying to see them with Jesus\u2019 eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\">Spilt milk won\u2019t matter in 20 years, but not making them clean up the mess- just might.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #465cb4;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\"><span class=\"text Prov-1-8\">Listen, my son, to your father\u2019s instruction\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-1-8\">and do not forsake your mother\u2019s teaching.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16410\" class=\"text Prov-1-9\">They will be a garland to grace your head\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-1-9\">and a chain to adorn your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em style=\"color: #465cb4;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;\"><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-1-9\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; color: #465cb4;\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-1\">Listen, my sons, to a father\u2019s instruction;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-1\">pay attention and gain understanding.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16493\" class=\"text Prov-4-2\">I give you sound learning,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-2\">so do not forsake my teaching. When I was a boy in my father&#8217;s house, still tender, and an only child of my mother, he taught me and said, \u00a0&#8221; Lay hold of my words with all your heart; Keep my commands and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. Do not forsake wisdom,and she will protect you; love her, \u00a0and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost you all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\" style=\"color: #465cb4; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16499\" class=\"text Prov-4-8\" style=\"color: #465cb4; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\" style=\"color: #465cb4; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-8\">embrace her, and she will honor you.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16500\" class=\"text Prov-4-9\" style=\"color: #465cb4; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">She will set a garland of grace on your head\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\" style=\"color: #465cb4; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-10\">and the years of your life will be many.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16502\" class=\"text Prov-4-11\" style=\"color: #465cb4; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; color: #465cb4;\"><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16509\" class=\"text Prov-4-18\">The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-18\">shining ever brighter till the full light of day.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16510\" class=\"text Prov-4-19\">But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-4-19\">they do not know what makes them stumble.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"poetry top-half\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; color: #465cb4;\"><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16511\" class=\"text Prov-4-20\">My son, pay attention to what I say;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-20\">listen closely to my words.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16512\" class=\"text Prov-4-21\">Do not let them out of your sight,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-21\">keep them within your heart;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16513\" class=\"text Prov-4-22\">for they are life to those who find them\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-22\">and health to a man\u2019s whole body.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; color: #465cb4;\"><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16514\" class=\"text Prov-4-23\">Above all else, guard your heart,<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-4-23\">for it is the wellspring of life.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16515\" class=\"text Prov-4-24\">Put away perversity from your mouth;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-24\">keep corrupt talk far from your lips.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16516\" class=\"text Prov-4-25\">Let your eyes look straight ahead,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-25\">fix your gaze directly before you.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16517\" class=\"text Prov-4-26\">Make level\u00a0paths for your feet\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-26\">and take only ways that are firm.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NIV1984-16518\" class=\"text Prov-4-27\">Do not swerve to the right or the left;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Prov-4-27\">keep your foot from evil.
