7 p.m. A Fragrant Offering

Finally, in my weak attempt to describe what prayer is to me, I offer up these words:

Prayer is a conversation.

Here I am Lord. Speak that I may hear You and You only.

Prayer is presenting my requests and petitions to Him.

Here’s where I am Lord. Here’s what’s going on in my life and the lives of those around me. I know You know already, but I have to tell You because You only do I trust with these needs.

Prayer is confessing – all- to Him.

My sin is ever before me, You have told me that it is forgiven and is as far as the east is from the west, so I give my sin to You.

Prayer is asking for forgiveness.

Forgive my unbelief, forgive my sin, forgive my hard heart, forgive my lack of trust, forgive my tongue. Forgive me. Mercy and Grace, Lord, mercy and grace.

Prayer is Worship.

Oh, Lord You are King of the Universe, Author and Creator of all, only You are worthy.

Prayer is Praise.

I praise You for You are my King, You provided a Way when there was No way. I see You in the flowers in the field, in the sunrises and the sunsets, in the shape of the clouds, in the face of a child. I hear you in the storm, in the crashing waves, in the gentle breeze through the trees of the forest, in the voice of the crow and the eagle. I feel Your touch in a baby’s breath, in the hand of an old woman, in the caress of the man I love. I taste Your handiwork in the sweetness of a strawberry, the salt of the sea, the tang of the grapefruit. I smell Your joy in the lavender, rose, and gardenia, the lemon and the jasmine.  You are in all good things.

Prayer is gratitude for His good gifts.

Thank You for providing for me, for placing me here in this time in this place, with these people, here on this journey, thank You for giving me a purpose, thank You for all things from Your Hand.

Prayer is acceptance of His Will.

Teach me to be content Lord, to accept all things from Your Hand.

Prayer is extending my trust to Him and to His Will.

I trust You, Lord. You are the Potter I am the clay; cracked pot though I may be; here I am use me for Your Glory.

May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. Psalm 141:2

And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. Revelation 5:8
